Just a quick Abstract thingie i wanted to draw, which also was an excuse to practice some anatomy/new things/angle and a different style of coloration (although the coloration was quick as well). I just love to experiment. xD
Aanyway, this time the meaning of this isn't open: The worst punishment ever would be to see The Light/Heaven while chained in the Darkness/Hell forever. Seeing something we want makes us want to reach it, and Seeing but not Reaching is even worse than not seeing it.
As they say: "What the eye doesn't see, the heart doesn't grieve over".
I didn't want to show sadness, anger or pain.. I wanted to show Resignation mixed with Struggles, as you can see by the curve of his body and the arm.. This is more about subtle Feelings rather than evident and strong ones.. this is more of a melancholy work.
The lines are too sketchy. You should use about 3 lines to get the shape you need. Lines close to your light source should be thinner and thick where there is shadow. The ring and pinky finger on the right hand bend awkwardly. Other than that I like the overall lighting and colors are muted. You should consider using a taller canvas (portrait orientation) I think that would add a more dramatic effect. Plus a taller canvas will allow you to finish the calf and foot which you can also use to extend the feeling of being drawn up towards the light.
Very cool sketch and concept! altho, I think it would have been cooler if you had done a little more with the other arm, like showing his hand expressing some more of that struggle he´s having. I also think it would have been a nice contrast to the light on the upper left corner if you had done total darkness on the bottom right (full black) and have it blend with the grey/shadow areas to create a better darkness-light concept! But it is a very good piece over all, nice job!
Why, thank you! Well, i just wanted to keep the overall colouring something light and "delicate", as this was just an experiment with the rendering of the light and a new colouring technique xD
As for the the other hand - you noticed it - i tend to avoid drawing them because i'm not good enough to match the other parts of the drawing... trying to fix that, though!
This is absolutely beautiful.... The soft lines and dark tones contrast wonderfully with the more harsh lighting... The texture and shading, along with the posing speaks so much... This is stunning, and it speaks more than a thousand words.
